Mental Heath means Member Health

Providing confidential, real-world mental health support for workers in the trades. Helping crews stay safe, focused, and supported before personal stress impacts families, performance, or the job.

People need a streamlined, accessible, and safe place to turn when they finally feel ready to ask for help. If there is not an obvious option to have an advocate, your members will likely never get the help they need.

The outrageous need for support

Almost one-fifth (17.9%) of deaths by suicide in North America were in those who worked in construction, despite construction workers accounting for only 7.4% of the workforce.

Our overall worker safety numbers are bad, real bad.

CPWR reports that in 2023 construction workers had 982 fatal work injuries, 15,910 fatal overdoses, and 5,095 suicides. OSHA says construction worker suicide rates are about 4x the general population, tied partly to seasonal work, demanding schedules, and injuries.

There is another way for our members.

The work your members do is generational. The mental health work one member does can have a positive impact for generations to come. If the member we serve is able to finally kick their addiction or resolve their dangerous anger outbursts, they change the course of their children’s lives and generations to come.

Why Backline

We give members a confidential place to talk with someone who understands the culture of work in the trades and can help them take the next step towards better mental health.

Whether a member is overwhelmed, worried about a coworker, navigating a family crisis, struggling with substance use, or simply unsure where to turn, the helpline provides compassionate support and practical direction.

Studies and industry reports suggest ~60–70% of those in the trades report anxiety, depression, or extreme stress at some point. Yet, only 4–5% of construction workers report seeing a mental health professional in a given year, far below national averages.
